This project was run in partnership with Space2 and Leeds Media Centre.

The project worked with a group of approximately 20 young people from the local community, to provide an intensive week of participatory arts activities in their local community.  The project focused on the exploration of the local area: pro’s and cons; perceptions and attitudes; crime and safety; issues facing young people; services and resources; and local education. Through participating in a series of workshops run by local artists including:

  • singing/song writing
  • camera/ interview techniques
  • movement/free running
  • music technology
  • graphic design

The young people worked towards producing content for a ‘Pop Promo’ style DVD.  The DVD package will include the young people’s music and artwork; a list of resources, community centres and points of information; video footage of interviews with peers and local people; photography stills from the project; and a music video featuring the participants discovery of Parkour, based on the French inspired youth culture, also known as ‘free-running’.

Local Artist who led the workshops........

Gee Goodison - dancer

Gee joined Northern School of Contemporary Dance (NSCD) at the age of 16 in 1989.  During his first year of training he successfully auditioned for The National Youth Dance Theatre. The company had an extensive performance tour schedule, which gave Gee an insight of the work that was expected of a professional dancer.  In his final year of training (1991) Gee was invited by the Director of Phoenix Dance Company (Neville Campbell) to work with the company as an apprentice.  Gee spent nine years touring with Phoenix visiting places like Jamaica, Brazil, Buenos Aires and Arizona.  He has performed in the presence of Nelson Mandela and members of the royal family, at a meeting for the members of the Commonwealth in Edinburgh, and the company was invited to perform as part of the Culture Olympiad at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta.  Gee has been involved in numerous dance/movement related education projects throughout his career with Phoenix, and as an Independent Practitioner. His experience includes working with Young Offenders and ‘At Risk’ youths in conjunction with Dance United – an organization that works with the Criminal Justice Board. He is currently a tutor for the outreach section of the Northern School of Contemporary Dance in Leeds, which provides dance classes for the public and a Saturday Dance School for children aged between 7 – 14 years old.
