Heartbeat Riddim Chant

DH

Following the sell-out production in 2005 of ‘Come Skank Wid Eye’, about Bob Marley, artist David Hamilton and Space2 returned with a show in 2007 which weaved a rich tapestry of dance, live music and voice.  ‘Heartbeat Riddim Chant’ blended vibrant Caribbean folk dancing with contemporary reggae and paid tribute to our diverse ancestry.

Working with dancers from David’s own company, ‘Regeyshun Dance’, professional guest dancers, professional live musicians and a musical director, a dance design specialist, and members of ‘Back-Bone’ (the adult community group which formed as a result of the Bob Marley project) ‘Heartbeat Riddim Chant’ brought together a vibrant line-up of local talent. The project also involved a number of youth dance groups, these being LS7 Results, Gee4orce Youth Dance Education and the Northern School of Contemporary Dance.  Through partnership work with West Yorkshire Playhouse, the project was also able to offer local young people the opportunity of 4 Apprenticeship positions in the specialist areas of Choreography, Design, Sound/Music and Stage Management.

The project and performance was a celebration of our ancestors and the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the Slave Trade through dance, live music and voice!

The memories:

"I learnt to do this big and be conifident in yourself and the harder you work the better the results!" Member of the Gee4orce Youth Group

"I learnt about African/Caribbean ritual, about the youth groups Leeds Young Authors and LS7 Results and their activities within the Chapeltown/Harehills communities. That I can choreograph (under duress!) and still perform (hurrah!) and I can act and stage-fight (that was cool!). I also learnt that it is possible to undertake such a big project and still have the sense of community and family amongst all those involved: The amazing musicians that are living and working in Leeds, that there are artists within the city who are on the same wavelength as me!" Pauline Mayers, Guest Dancerpi

"I liked everything! The whole cast were amasing! David’s brilliant and I liked the idea of been a super star writer." A member of the Leeds Young Authors group.

"I loved the vibe the energy, the music, the support, learning and challenging myself." A member of 'Back Bone' adult community group
