In late 2007, with the assistance of Space2 and in partnership with Yorkshire Dance Centre, RODA submitted a funding bid to the Arts Council and was successful in securing a small amount of money to organise and run its first 'Production Development Phase'!

During December 2007 founder member of RODA (and choreographer) Douglas Thorpe began preparations for developing his choreographic work that began in the RODA summer 2007 creative collective.

In early 2008 Douglas contracted 4 dance artists, hit the studio and began work developing the dance piece which is now known as 'Dry Toast'.

'DRY TOAST'....

Is a highly energetic and thought provoking piece of dance theatre exploring the effects of drug addiction and the distress it causes to people around.

Douglas Thorpe is supported by the Arts Council of England, RODA, Yorkshire Dance, Space2 Leeds and Red Ladder TheatreCompany.

During February 2008, 'Dry Toast' performed at the Place, London as part of 'Resolutions 2008':

“The four much more experienced women in Douglas Thorpe's Dry Toast deliver their difficult material with real gravitas. This bruising piece sees them locked into destructive, nihilistic cycles. In a harsh, sparse set, they repeatedly crash land on the tables, the floor, the bed, each other, hurling themselves about in blind frustration, or flapping futilely on the floor like netted fish. With its searing sounds, its images of people in conflict and in conflict avoidance, Dry Toast, was easily the highlight of the evening.”

The production then went onto peform to a sell out audience at Leeds University Studio One in March 2008.

Earlier this year, Douglas Thorpe was nominated for 'The Place Prize Award 2008'. Out of the hundred's of artists nation wide reviewed for this prestigous title, Douglas was one of the final 40 artists considered for the price. Next time he hopes to be even more successful in his attempt to win this amazing award!
